Chapter 13

The weekend was filled with nothing but playing catch-up after Colton left her office, looking tousled but obviously disappointed she hadn’t taken him up on his offer. He was hard to turn down, especially with promises of lazy Saturdays wrapped in soft sheets and a tangle of limbs. But she had a mountain of work to get done, and it was better this way. After a makeshift shower of her important parts in the bathroom, she spent the entirety of the day at Westbrook and left only when the clock hit seven p.m. The budget review really could be done from home and if she didn’t eat something soon, she may actually die. But most importantly, she’d been wearing the same clothes for over twenty-four hours and really needed to change.

Home didn’t offer much reprieve. She continued to wade through her fourteen hundred missed emails while somehow managing to put away her suitcase and continuing to redline the budget report until it looked as though she had bled all over it. The weekend ended faster than it began, and as Monday morning rolled around, she had, for the most part, gotten caught up and could face the first business day of the week with a real smile on her lips.

The sun was shining when she pulled open the heavy glass door of Westbrook’s lobby and click-clacked her way toward the elevator bank. She gave a congenial wave to Adriana at the front desk, someone who, to her extreme credit and Caroline’s gratitude, was always there a half hour before her shift started. The bright ping of the elevator sounded and she moved into the car, adjusting the strap of her briefcase over her shoulder. With her laptop and the additional files she had toted along with her over the weekend, the bag was heavier than normal.

It was a blessing when she was able to smack the offending bag onto her desk and relieve her body of the burden of the extra weight. From there, she sat down and lost herself in work. She was pleased the completed stack was by far the largest, and the “needs to be reviewed” stack was steadily dwindling. A fissure of happiness welled up inside her as she moved the budget report she’d worked on to the center. It was unnatural how being productive could set her mood for the week.

At 9:30, Kat kicked open the door to her office, eyeing both her and the stack of items neatly lined on her friend’s desk with disgust. “Have you slept since you’ve been back?” she asked tartly, waving her hand at the piles ready and waiting to be distributed.

“Yes,” Caroline drawled with a roll of her eyes and a flick of her wrist. The facility report snapped open with a sharp slap.

“Your tan looks amazing. So at least I know you managed to make it outside while you were gone.”

“Florida does have a lot of sun, but there are also these handy little things called smartphones.
